Melchor Contracting were awarded the concrete package for the Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) Upgrade on FMG’s Christmas Creek mine. The WHIMS project was defined as a key project for FMG as the upgrade uses new technology to extract high-grade iron ore more efficiently than the current magnetic separation methods in use. As a result, the civil works were under a tight schedule and were required to be completed within a 12-week period in order for Primero to get a head start on mechanical works.

The scope for the civil works included bulk and detailed earthworks, steel fixing, formwork carpentry and concrete. There was a total of 300T of steel reinforcement in the project with 2500m3 of concrete poured, which included 10 major pours. The concrete works had over 200 concrete pedestals with a number being over 2m in height, with a similar amount of footings.

The crew side had on average 35 personnel on the ground at any one time, which covered all disciplines throughout the course of the project. The project had 6 major areas and at peak 5 of these areas were online at the same time.
