Roos outshine Kiwis in rugby showdown
On May 17, Karratha played host to NRL WA’s annual ANZAC Challenge – a match that is played across the Pilbara with different regional towns taking on hosting duties each year. Amongst those taking to the field were six people from the Melchor team, each from differing cultures and backgrounds.
Hundreds watched from the sidelines at Karratha Leisureplex as the Pilbara Kangaroos rugby team took on the Pilbara Kiwis, battling it out with plenty of hard-hitting runs and tackles.
“It was a great turnout from the local and remote Pilbara communities, and we’re very proud of our Melchor team,” General Superintendent, Andy Hardeman said.
Honouring the ANZAC spirit, the national anthems from both Australia and New Zealand were played alongside The Last Post. And, in true Kiwi form, the team performed the Haka at the start of the match, borrowing the tradition from New Zealand’s beloved union team, the All Blacks.
The game was a tough one, with the men on both teams demonstrating class, skill, and sheer determination throughout the duration of the 80-minute showdown.
“The Pilbara Kiwis snatched the victory, winning the match 24-20 with Alro Faafei taking out the award for Player of the Match,” Andy said.
“Our gratitude extends to Amana Upu for volunteering to help NRL WA as a trainer for the Pilbara Roos. And a big shoutout to Mark Dwyer for organising a van from the camp to the playing grounds to get the boys and girls out there for an exhilarating night of footy!”
Despite the triumph and loss of the night, community sport was the real winner in the end. Congratulations to everyone who was involved!
