Prominent Hill Operations Expansion Project

Prominent Hill currently consists of an underground mining operation and a 10Mtpa copper processing facility. A copper, gold, and silver concentrate is produced onsite and transported offsite for smelting and refining.

The Prominent Hill Operations Expansion Project will increase production from the Malu underground mine and its extension at depth. The project includes the construction of the Winder Building hoist systems for the Wirra Shaft ore cart load-out system, inclusive of the winder and all associated systems and controls.

Melchor was engaged to construct the winder, chiller, switchrooms, transformer and diesel generator footings and slabs. This included:

• Detailed earthworks – 1,600 cubic metres

• Formwork – 1,300 square metres

• Reinforcement – 120 tonnes

• Concrete placement – 1,000 cubic metres

• Trenching works – 850 metres

Key highlights

• Drill and install of 20-metre ground anchors (subcontractor works)

• Completion of winder foundation concrete pours totalling 470 cubic metres
