- Year completed: 2020 - 2021
The East Rockingham Waste to Energy Project is a 300,000-tonne-per-annum waste-to-energy facility located in Rockingham, south of Perth. The facility provides a cost-effective waste treatment solution and a vital source of dispatchable renewable energy, while achieving a 96% diversion rate of residual waste from landfill.
Melchor was awarded two separate civil packages comprising detailed earthworks, construction of major concrete structures (including formwork, reinforcement and concrete placement), and the installation of underground services. These services included process water, stormwater, sewage, chemical systems, firefighting networks, electrical infrastructure and earthing systems.
Melchor placed approximately 7,500 cubic metres of concrete, including 20-metre-high walls within the Refuse Bunker Building and installed approximately 1,100 tonnes of reinforcement.
A major milestone of the project was the completion of the boiler house foundation. Melchor successfully delivered this in a single continuous concrete pour, placing 1,500 cubic metres over an 11-hour shift.
