A big win for one of our biggest hearts
Melchor recently welcomed the MATES WA team to its Osborne Park head office for a pre-Christmas Toolbox Talk. The morning served as an important reminder that, while the festive season brings joy for many, it can also be a challenging and isolating time for others. It also encouraged everyone to pause, reconnect, and look out for the people around them.
Before the barbeque breakfast, MATES WA presented Development and Training Operations Coordinator Michael Ablett with the 2025 MATES Leadership Award, recognising his outstanding commitment to mental health advocacy, awareness and support across the business.
“Mick is the true embodiment of mates helping mates,” Melchor Operations Manager, Dylan Ogilvie said.
“He doesn’t just talk about looking out for people, he lives it every day. Whether it’s organising MATES sessions, sitting in to support others, or just being that steady presence on site. He shows up for his team in a way that really matters.
“What sets Mick apart is his consistency. He’s the same genuine, caring bloke whether he’s on site, in the office or out in the community. People trust him because they know he means what he says.”
Beyond the workplace, Mick volunteers with a not-for-profit organisation that re-gifts pre-loved sporting equipment to under‑privileged kids and families. He has also dedicated his time to their after‑school program in Port Hedland, helping create healthy dinner routines and offering positive support to young people who need it most.
When presented with the award, Mick said he was humbled by the recognition.
“I’m really grateful for this. But honestly, I just try to do my bit,” he said.
“We all have tough days, and if I can make someone else’s day a little easier, that’s what matters. I’m lucky to work with good people who look out for each other.”
Congratulations, Mick. We’re incredibly proud to have you in our team.
